CAMino De Santiago 2027
To prepare for my planned Appalachian Trail thru-hike, I will first complete the Camino Primitivo in Spain. This route will give me a chance to test my hiking gear during a real long-distance journey. It will also help me learn what works, what fails, and what I can leave behind. A spreadsheet can estimate pack weight, but a mountain has a much more honest opinion.
The Camino Primitivo begins in Oviedo and travels west through northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela. It covers roughly 320 kilometers, or about 200 miles, depending on the route and any side trips. The trail crosses the mountains and rural countryside of Asturias before entering Galicia. It is known as one of the most scenic and demanding Camino routes.
The route includes steep climbs, long descents, rough paths, and frequent changes in weather. Hikers pass through small villages, forests, farmland, and open mountain terrain. The Hospitales section is one of the route’s best-known stages because of its wide mountain views and exposed landscape. These conditions make the Primitivo a strong test for footwear, rain gear, layering, and pack comfort.
During the hike, I plan to test each part of my equipment under real trail conditions. I want to see how my shoes handle repeated miles, how well my clothing dries, and whether my pack remains comfortable after several long days. I will also test my trekking poles, water system, electronics, charging setup, and foot-care supplies. Any item that causes pain, adds needless weight, or fails to serve a clear purpose will be replaced or removed.
The Camino Primitivo will also help me build the habits needed for a much longer thru-hike. I can practice pacing, recovery, daily planning, resupply, and caring for my feet before small problems become serious. Although the Camino offers more towns and lodging than the Appalachian Trail, it still requires steady effort across many days. Completing it will give me useful experience, stronger confidence, and a clearer equipment plan for future long-distance adventures.
So stay tuned for updates!
